At 2642 metres in height, Trus Madi is the second tallest mountain in Malaysia after Kinabalu. However, what Trus Madi lacks in height it more than makes up for in beauty, as the mountain is home to one of the most beautiful readily accessible moss forests in the region—with its low canopied trees often covered in moss, which itself harbours orchids and ferns, it is certainly any nature lover's wonderland.

There are three main trails to the summit of Trus Madi. The route quoted here is the most comfortable of the three and certainly the least strenuous, however it is by no means less adventurous as it is the only one that requires some off roading to get to the jump-off point. The other routes are available on request, but require additional days and require camping (bedding is provided in a mountain hut with kitchen for this route), thus this route is suitable even for those who don't necessarily have camping gear with them.

Mount Trus Madi features in our Giant Nepenthes Expedition video!

Adventure Itinerary

Day 1: Following an early breakfast, we transfer to the town of Tambunan in mini-vans where we register for our climbs. 4WD vehicles then take us up an old logging road to the national park substation where we begin our ascent of Mt Trus Madi along a purpose built board walk that protects the forest floor from erosion. We sleep in a mountain hut near the end of the boardwalk complete with bunks and a simple kitchen; sleeping bags and pillows are provided.

Day 2: May participants choose to leave for the summit well before daybreak so that they can see the sunrise from the summit of the mountain, while others opt to leave a little later. Either way, you will spend a day on the summit of Mt. Trus Madi, exploring the peaty trail amongst some of Borneo’s most beautiful mossy cloud-forest, liberally festooned with orchids (particularly miniature epiphytes of the genera Dendrobium, Dendrochilum and Bulbophyllum, but also terrestrials of the genus Corybas) and home to the carnivorous pitcher plants Nepenthes lowii, N. tentaculata and N. macrophylla. We return to the mountain hut in time for dinner.

Day 3: Following breakfast, we descend Mt. Trus Madi, returning by vehicle to the lowlands. En route to Kota Kinabalu we will visit a reserve to see the beautiful, white-spotted Rafflesia pricei should any happen to be in flower.
